Who We Are: DJs Speak Out Written by the participants of Girls' DJ 101 (Spring 2004)
My name is Shakima and I'm a sweet, nice girl to know and be with. I was interested in taking this program because I always wanted to be a DJ along with my cousin. I think it is important for girls to DJ because girls can show boys that they know how to DJ too. My favorite thing about this program is meeting friends and playing music. DJ 101 has changed the way I listen to music because when I listen to music now I listen to how many beats the song has.

It's important for girls to learn how to DJ because it's a fun hobby and it's fun to learn. It also proves girls can do the same things guys do. I learned how to skip beats, set up the turntables, and mix music together. I learned that old music can sound better than new music. My friends are proud and they all want to try. Plus they want me to do parties. DJing is harder than I thought it would be because I have to set it up just right or it won't sound good. I would tell girls do not give up on it (DJing) even if it's not something you want to do, because in the end, you're going to have fun.

My mom made me take DJ 101 for girls. I was surprised to learn that I can get paid to DJ. I got paid $10 at the Spiral Q Open House. It's important for girls to learn how to DJ because boys get too much credit for things like rapping and DJing, so girls need to be known as well. When people find out I'm learning how to DJ, they are surprised, confused, jealous, and happy. Whatever the feeling is, I wouldn't stop DJing for anything. DJ 101 has changed the way I listen to music because I like to count the BPM (beats per minute on all my favorite songs now. I want to learn how to battle and maybe scratch.
