Who We Are

The Girls' DJ Collective was founded in 2003 by Carolyn Chernoff and Rashida Holmes. We strive to amplify the presence and impact of women and girls in the music industry while combating the misogyny and homophobia that all too often permeate the business and pleasure of music. We are particularly interested in demystifying the art and science of DJing by sharing equipment, techniques, and skills with women and girls.

Co-founder of the Girls’ DJ Collective, Rashida Holmes (AKA DJ Giggles) is a Chicago househead from back in the day. Having followed the careers of many of her favorite house DJs over the years, she is finally realizing a lifelong dream of spinning her own eclectic house mixes for anyone who will listen. She is especially excited to be introducing (or re-introducing) classic, deep, soulful house (her first true love) to a new generation of girl DJs. Rashida is a community educator and size activist dedicated to encouraging women and girls to take up space in every facet of life.

Carolyn Chernoff (AKA Miss Meow) is an education consultant (K-12/college/adult), PhD candidate and DJ. In addition to her work as a teacher and program director in the areas of expressive arts and violence-prevention, Carolyn has taught DJ skills at WAMH, 89.3 FM in Amherst MA, and radio journalism techniques in Chicago alternative high schools, worked as a broadcast specials producer at WBEZ 91.5 FM (Chicago’s NPR affiliate), and spins a mix of punk/garage/rocksteady/old school hip hop at Philadelphia rock clubs such as The Khyber and Tritone. She is the co-founder of the Girls’ DJ Collective.
